His duties include consulting on the legal and regulatory environment in which the local government's records are created, managed, and destroyed, including application of retention control schedules. He manages a document imaging lab where records are converted to the formats they need to be in to meet the business needs of elected officials, including paper document imaging and microfilming. He has been certified as a specialist in electronic records management by the Association for Information and Image Management (AIIM) since 2006. Shawn also manages the county's Archives Program to preserve records of historic value and make them available to researchers, scholars, genealogists and others.
